Still without a name, they practiced and played locally, as drummers came and went. The boys were regular attendees at the Top Twenty Club in Durham Lane, and it was there that they met Neil Edwards.

Along with fellow V8 rock'n'roller, Tony Rawnsley, a band was formed, but they still needed a bass player. Before long he and the drummer, Barry Winfield, arrived in Auckland and moved into the rented house with Archie. Meanwhile back in Mt Maunganui, Harvey Mann had been playing guitar in another local band called the Krazy Kats. By 1965 he was living in an old rented house in Magee Street down by the railway yards in Otahuhu. In 1963 Archie went to live in Auckland as a V8 boy, his musical interests at that time shifting more to British R'n'B. Julian's girlfriend at the time was Harvey Mann's sister. This group consisted of Julian Collier on lead guitar, Roger Knight on drums, Dennis Pocock on piano, and Archie playing second guitar and sharing the vocals. He was very interested in rock and roll, and by 1960 was a member of a local group called the String Stars.

It all started back in 1957 in Mt Maunganui, when Archie Bowie got his wake-up call after hearing Elvis Presley's 'Hound Dog'. The Underdogs went through many line-up changes during their time, with numerous people coming and going. Doug Thomas runs a successful stereo importing business. Neil Edwards still works the pub circuit. Murray Grindlay went on to play in several other bands and write jingles. There was one further brief reformation in the late seventies. His replacement was Chaz Burke-Kennedy, but their cover of Frank Zappa's You Can Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance had to be retitled There Will Come A Time to satisfy the censors, but it didn't sell well and conflict over musical direction (or lack of it) saw the band in limbo again. Rawnsley designed the cover for their album then left. Doug Thomas had also been in The Breakaways. That's not the end of the story, however, later that year Murray Grindlay and Harvey Mann (both in The Brew) decided to reform the band in Auckland (line-up E). Neil Edwards also did a stint with Human Instinct and then Headband. The move to Wellington proved a bad one 'cos they found it hard to get work. He was replaced by former Breakaways' member Dave Orams, who in turn gave way to ex-Bitter End man George Barris. At the end of the year they decided to relocate to Wellington, which led to the departure of Neil Edwards to Le Frame. In 1967, their hot reputation as a live band earned them a slot on the touring version of the 'C'mon! Show' when the frequently brought the house down. Apart from being a huge local hit the single made the National Top 20. Lou Rawnsley replaced him and his fuzzy guitar line was a characteristic of their follow-up, a cover of John Mayall's Sitting In The Rain. After the release of their debut 45 See Saw they appeared on the national T.V. They quickly established a reputation as a wild live act and in Harvey Mann had one of the best blues guitarists in New Zealand. The name change came in 1966 and The Underdogs signed to Zodiac Records at the tail end of '66. This Auckland band evolved out of the Underground Blues Band, which had formed in 1965.
